COMING OUT DAY

LGBTI people still face barriers in society and “Coming Out” to family and friends can often be a challenging experience wrapped up with fear of rejection. National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is an annual LGBTI awareness day observed on October 11, to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people to "come out of the closet". The foundational belief is that homophobia thrives in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance, and that once people know that they have loved ones who are lesbian or gay, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic or oppressive views.

To mark the occasion we have collated 4 accounts of coming out, three from the people in the LGBTI community and serving police officers and one, a parent (police staff) of an LGBT child. Only by having open and honest discussions can we effect positive change.

Thank you to those who put pen to paper and took the time to write these accounts.

People perform better at work when they can be themselves. This means it is in your employer's best interest to support you to be open and honest about who you are when at work. The Equality Act 2010 bans discrimination and harassment on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender reassignment (gender identity) in employment. This includes direct and indirect discrimination, harassment and victimisation, and you are protected throughout the entire employment relationship. Discrimination applies to terms and conditions, pay, promotions, transfers, training and dismissal.

Stonewall have a range of resources to help LGBTI people who may be thinking about coming out, as well as some great advice and programmes for those who want to be better LGBT allies. For support or advice on 'Coming Out'
